Louisiana is still recovering from the devastation caused by hurricane Katrina is 2005. Crime is a major problem. Louisiana has the highest homicide rate in the US - at 10.8 per 100,000. Income inequality and police brutality are also major problems. Louisiana incarcerates more people per capita than anywhere else on Earth - an astonishing 1,082 per 100,000.
4. Alabama
Alabama is both one of the poorest and most dangerous states in the US. The two biggest cities in the state, Birmingham and Montgomery, both have a homicide rate higher than 20 per 100,000. Alabama receives Ds and Fs in all seven topical areas that affect women's lives: political participation, employment, work and family, opportunity, reproductive rights, health and well-being.
3. Kentucky
Kentucky has the highest percentage of smokers of any state - 29%, and, unsurprisingly, the highest cancer rate - 515 per 100,000. Almost 1/5 of the state's population lives below the poverty live. Kentucky is ranked as the 2nd most miserable state in Gallup's well-being index.
2. Mississippi
Mississippi ranks dead last of any US state in many categories. It has the lowest life expectancy in the country. It is the most illiterate, most corrupt, most obese, poorest and least developed state in the US.
1. West Virginia
West Virginia ranks last or next-to-last in every mental health category, including the average number of "mentally unhealthy" days residents have per month and the percentage of people who experience frequent mental distress. Life expectancy is only 75.4 years.
